4&5. Preliminary Task and Eval
Our task was to create a one minute film with the main objective of using continuity editing; this involved filming and editing a character opening and closing a door, crossing a room and sitting down opposite another character, with whom he/she exchanges a couple of lines with. To aim to the highest standard of continuity editing we had to make sure that we filmed using three specific techniques; Match on action, Shot Reverse Shot, 180 degree rule.
Explanation;
Match on action- refers to film editing and video editing techniques where the editor cuts from one shot to another view that matches the first shot's action.
Shot Reverse Shot- a film technique where one character is shown looking at another character (often off-screen), and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character.
180 degree rule- a cinematography guideline that states that two characters in a scene should maintain the same left/right relationship to one another . When the camera passes over the invisible axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line and the shot becomes what is called a reverse angle.
Pre Production:
We only had roughly 30 minutes to plan our Pre-Lim Task and in this time we found out that the best thing to do with what we had been given would be a sort of transaction.
We did not have time to come up with a storyboard but we were able to come up with a mini script which was given a slight disregard to.
Production:
After the 30 minutes we were told that we could go film but we hadn't thought of the location and were only aloud to film on site so we spent about 5 minutes walking up and down finding the right location.
We settled for a small hall.
It is there were we finally finished the plan for what we were going to do.
Luckily we had a few props around that allowed us to develop the plan this was a table, chairs and a box of ping pong balls.
In the hall we had a lot of free space to film with and as a group we went through the different techniques that were needed to complete the task.
Post Production:
We imported all the different scenes we filmed onto Final Cut Pro.
Using Final Cut Pro we then started to piece together all the different scenes using match on action, shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule which when put all together perfectly, we had a film with what I would say pretty good continuity editing.
We then added in our own little production picture and soundtrack at the beginning.
We added in music and a funny voice audio throughout the film to develop it.
At the end we added in our rolling credits and added a blooper.
Then we exported it to YouTube it was here that our video suddenly changed as YouTube had felt that our video was too shaky and that their video editor could fix it but all it did was make it worse and so we had to rectify the problem.
As we were in a hall with one side completely made of windows they way we positioned ourselves made us sometimes look like silhouettes, so next time we need to think about positioning.
The match on action was really good.
The Shot reverse Shot on the table was really good.
We overcame the poor sound by putting subtitles in.
What I have learnt from it:
When we were editing we realized that the actors voices couldn't be heard so next time we film we need to make sure they speak loud and clear. As we were in a hall with one side completely made of windows they way we positioned ourselves made us sometimes look like silhouettes, so next time we need to think about positioning.
Audience Feedback:
In the beginning we had a very effective controlled vertical pan (camera movement) on the walking of the shoes. The match on action was really good.
The Shot reverse Shot on the table was really good.
We overcame the poor sound by putting subtitles in.
